We have started this year by setting goals, talking about respect for the music studio and ourselves. Music can open doors for expression as well as conjure insecurities if a student is not feeling confident. I look at our process as the assessment. The final product is often fraught with mistakes, personal experience tells me this, and that is okay. It is more than okay. Our mistakes allow us to fine tune, become aware, build resilience. The video below illustrates this beautifully.
We have begun by playing games, talking about the students' desires in music, and songwriting. We will collaborate as a class to write a song that we will perform in the future. I want to set the stage for this year with openness, positivity, and meaningfulness.
